L’Atelier Joël Robuchon: now in Montreal

Joël Robuchon’s Atelier has been the subject of many conversations ever since it opened last December. Although the chef with the most stars in the world is now making many Montrealers proud, he definitely raised some eyebrows. Above the financial controversy, what else is hidden in this Casino de Montreal restaurant?

Hallways full of gambling machines and game tables lead to the bright entry. The restaurant only seats 56, 36 of them being at the bar, where the action really happens — and you definitely won’t want to miss that! The open-kitchen concept allows the clients to observe the preparation of the meals, and, in some way, to sit in the first row of this gastronomical show.

The preparation of the meals is without a doubt what makes Robuchon the amazing chef he is. The entirely Québécois employees of the restaurant have been trained to recreate the Atelier’s ambiance that is felt in Paris, Shanghai and London. Chef Eric Gonzalez, born in Juan les Pins in Southern France, is the mastermind behind the kitchen. In just a few years, he has built himself a solid reputation in the Montreal gastronomy industry.

The menu offers appetizers starting from $22, and main courses starting from $30. I, however, strongly recommend you the Experience, a 7 course meal for $150. It allows you to try all the signature dishes by plunging you in the true essence of the restaurant. There are also vegetarian options as well as smaller portions, which is perfect for curious adventurers who want to try the place out without spending the entire evening there.

An impeccable and welcoming service distinguishes this high-end restaurant from many others. No awkwardness, no pretentiousness. The employees know how to receive, appreciate and explain the meals with delicacy, and offer a variety of wines. Robuchon also incorporates French techniques in his Québécois dishes. There are cheeses from here, such as the Boileau deer, a local pork as well as many products that the province is known for.

The decor might seem disappointing, but that is because the Atelier has a precise color code — red and black — and it is therefore why the decorations seem so strict. A touch of modernity could definitely add a bit of charm to this restaurant, though!

The verdict? Foodies and lovers of cooking must definitely try this place out, either it is to taste a high-quality dish or for a drink before a night out. Montreal is full of places where gastronomical talent and high-end cuisine shine, and we are definitely proud of our city for them. The Atelier is one of them.
